Superleggera 699 with upholstered seat - Cassina

The Superleggera is one of Gio Ponti's authentic masterpieces, a symbol of perfection and balance between solidity and lightness. The name of this wooden chair underlines its distinctive feature: it weighs just 1.7 kg and can be lifted with a finger.

Uninterruptedly produced by Cassina since 1957, it is the fruit of Gio Ponti's research and of the experimental and manufacturing skills of Cassina and its craftsmen who invented the knurled joint of the tenon, carved directly from the solid wood of the seat frame, to make an extremely solid chair in spite of its very slender form.

A masterpiece whose exemplarity lies in the correspondence between form and content, a spokesman for a new expressiveness of the modern. "In creating the Superleggera," said Gio Ponti, "I followed the perennial process of technique, which goes from the heavy to the light: removing inert matter and weight, identifying form with structure to the limit, wisely and without virtuosity, that is, respecting utility and exact solidity at the same time".

In its version with upholstered seat, Gio Ponti's Superleggera has a frame in natural ash, ash stained white, black or red, or lacquered in white or black. The latter two-tone version further emphasises the concept of thinning and fading of the structure proposed by Superleggera. "In semi-darkness," said Ponti, "the chair will be even lighter because it will only stand on two legs".

The Superleggera version is also available with a seat in India cane and frame in natural or lacquered ash.
