Luna Verticale - Floor Lamp

Gio Ponti combined the strength of two places, one made of paper that he consciously called "Domus", the other made of walls, those of the garage on Via Dezza that he transformed to house his studio. Here he has encouraged and promoted diverse experiences, built a network of international relations, and transformed his design and publishing enterprises - in addition to "Domus", "Stile" and the extraordinary monographic issue of "Aria d'Italia", Espressione di Gio Ponti, designed with Daria Guarnati - into both physical and ideal incubators of confrontation and dialogue to define a new vision of architecture and high quality production. These places and their rituals, the fluid interpenetration of different practices, the invention of a new writing that could describe, almost as in a diary, what was happening, were the most certain affirmation of the high climate expressed by the Italian arts. As were the Triennali, in which Ponti had a position that went beyond that of cultural organiser, in the need to qualify the presence of architecture and design. In 1957, for the 11th edition, in the Pavilion for Building Proposals installed in Sempione Park, he presented two lamps that he designed in different variations. In a preparatory study, hands are almost grasping a full sphere like the moon. Right next to it appears the word 'moon'. And then the sphere squashes at the poles, on the vertical and horizontal axis, and then one half is coloured, and then it tilts. In an endless game of possibilities taking shape.
