Superleggera is one of Gio Ponti's authentic masterpieces, a symbol of perfection and balance between solidity and lightness. The name underlines the distinctive feature: it weighs just 1.7 kg and is raised with a finger.
Continuously produced by Cassina since 1957, it is the result of Gio Ponti's research and Cassina's experimentation and processing ability and of its craftsmen who invented the knurled joint of the tenon, obtained directly from the solid frame of the seat to make a whole very solid despite the very thin sections.
A masterpiece whose exemplariness lies in the correspondence between form and content, the spokesman of a new expressiveness of the modern. "Creating the Superleggera - said Gio Ponti - I followed the perennial process of the technique, which goes from heavy to light: removing inert matter and weight, identifying the shape with the structure to the limit, wisely and without virtuosity, that is respecting at the same time the 'utility and exact solidity'.
In addition to the version with a structure in natural ash or lacquered in white or black and with a seat in rattan there are two versions: a version with a structure in natural ash, stained white or black with open pore with upholstered seat with upholstery in fabric or leather in various colors and a white and black two-tone lacquered ash version with white or graphite leather seat. A version, the latter, which further underlines the concept of thinning and fading of the structure. "In the shadows - Ponti said - the chair will be even lighter because it will only stand on two legs".
